What is a feelings wheel?
A feelings wheel is a circle of words for feelings, arranged in rings. The eight in the center are broad, everyday feelings. Each ring further out is more specific, so “Afraid” leads to “Anxious”, and “Anxious” leads to “Worried”, “Nervous” or “Uneasy”. It’s a way to find a more exact word for what you feel.
The words, groupings and colors on this wheel are our own. Half of it is comfortable feelings and half is hard ones, because both are part of an ordinary week.
How to use it
Start in the center with the word that’s closest to how you feel. If a word further out fits better, choose it; if not, a broad word is a good answer too. More than one feeling can be true at once. Each word has a short description and a gentle prompt to write about, if you’d like to. Answers you save stay in this browser, with your other journal answers.
Why naming a feeling can help
Some research suggests that putting a feeling into words can make it feel a little less intense (Lieberman et al., 2007). Research on emotional granularity, the ability to tell similar feelings apart, has linked it to handling hard feelings in healthier ways (Kashdan, Barrett & McKnight, 2015). A feelings wheel is simply a place to look for those words.

When a feeling is heavy
Some of these words are hard to sit with. The wheel isn’t a test or a diagnosis, and it can’t tell you what’s wrong. If a feeling has been heavy for a while, or you don’t feel safe, please talk to someone you trust or reach out for free support. If you’re in danger, call your local emergency number.
