Feeling worn out

Feeling worn out means being used up after a long stretch of effort, so that even small things take more than you have left.

What does feeling worn out feel like?

Everything takes longer. You read the same line twice, small decisions like what to cook feel like too much, and you’re short with people you like. It usually builds over days or weeks, through a busy season at work, a house move or a new baby, though one very hard day can do it too.

Is worn out a feeling?

It’s both a feeling and a state of the body: the tiredness that follows effort, and the mood that comes with it, often flat and short-tempered.

Worn out or listless?

Worn out has a reason you can point to: you’ve done a lot, and rest usually helps. Listless can arrive without one, on a slow afternoon or an empty weekend, and rest doesn’t always shift it. What’s missing is interest, not energy you’ve spent.
