Feeling drained

Feeling drained means your energy has run out, often after giving a lot of yourself to other people, to work or to worry.

What does feeling drained feel like?

You get home and can’t face one more question, even a kind one. Answering a message feels like work, and a quiet room sounds better than any company. It’s common after a day of looking after others, a long meeting, a difficult conversation or a lot of noise.

Drained or worn out?

Worn out comes from effort: a long shift, moving house, weeks of early starts. Drained comes from giving: listening, comforting, keeping the peace, being “on” for other people. Worn out usually wants rest. Drained usually wants quiet, and fewer people asking things of you for a while.
