Feeling tender means gentle care for someone, or feeling raw and easily hurt. Soreness to the touch is a separate, physical meaning not covered here.
What does feeling tender feel like?
Watching someone you love fall asleep, tucking a blanket around a child, cupping an old dog’s face in your hands: tenderness is soft and careful, and it often comes with a wish to protect.
In its other meaning, feeling tender is being easily hurt, when a small comment lands harder than it would on another day, often after a hard week or a loss.
Tender or warm?
Warm is friendly and open, and it can reach anyone: a neighbor, a shop assistant, a room full of strangers. Tender is softer and closer. It’s usually for someone you love, or someone small or fragile, and you want to handle them gently.
