Feeling thoughtful

Feeling thoughtful means being in a slow, careful frame of mind, turning something over and giving it your full attention before you decide.

What does feeling thoughtful feel like?

You go quieter than usual. You read a message twice before answering, take the long way home to think, or let your tea go cold while you weigh a job offer or a hard conversation. Thoughtful moods often follow a good question, from a friend, a book or a child who asked something you couldn’t answer.

Is thoughtful a feeling?

It’s more a frame of mind than a feeling: closer to how you’re thinking than to what you feel. Thoughtful also has a second meaning, considerate of other people, as in a thoughtful gift or a thoughtful neighbor. This page is about the first.

Thoughtful or pensive?

Thoughtful is careful thinking with no particular mood attached; you might feel thoughtful while planning a garden. Pensive is quieter and heavier. It shows on the face, and people usually call someone pensive when the thought seems to weigh on them: a worry, a loss, or a choice with no easy answer.
