Feeling joyful

Feeling joyful means a bright, full-hearted gladness that things are good right now, often strong enough to show in your face, voice or step.

What does feeling joyful feel like?

It tends to rise rather than settle: the first swim of summer, a dog going wild at the door when you come home, a grandparent holding a new baby. You might laugh for no reason, want to call someone, or feel your chest open up. Joy is often brief, and it can arrive in the middle of an ordinary afternoon without asking permission.

Joyful or playful?

Joyful is the feeling itself, the bright sense that something is good. Playful is one thing joy can do with its energy: joke, race someone to the corner, turn folding the laundry into a game. You can be joyful and completely still, watching a sunrise you’ve waited for. Playfulness needs to move, make noise or make someone laugh.
